Entries for April, 2006

I look forward to weekends because I get to sleep in during these days. I should relish these weekends because in about a month, I'll be giving up my Saturdays for work. But then again, that wouldn't be so bad.

Yesterday, Rosa and I went out to watch Ice Age: The Meltdown. Iam wasn't able to come to complete our triumvirate because she had a photography workshop. Decided to watch at Festival Mall because there would be a lot of people in ATC for sure. After going to the optical shop so Rosa can pick up her new glasses, we headed up to the cinemas. Hehehe, the flick was cute. Pretty much for kids, but pretty funny as well. Per usual, Scrat was still at it with a darn acorn all throughout the movie. I just had to laugh when the vultures started singing "Food, Glorious Food" from Oliver, wahahaha.

After the movie, we decided to hang around at ATC instead of staying in Festival Mall, because we much prefer the ambience there. Went around and window shopped, and even stumbled into this sale at the Activity Center. After we had dinner, I even managed to drag Rosa to Timezone for a few rounds of Percussion Master, hahaha. We also found this game in the corner called "Feed Big Bessy". It was reminiscent of the "Feed Big Bertha" game Rosa, Iam and I once played during our high school freshman days, back when ATC wasn't renovated yet, and there was Glico's instead of Timezone.

Before we went home, we even went to the other Timezone near the cinemas for a game of Bishi Bashi. I even got her to play this other game... what was it called again? Dance Freaks? It's the one with the red and blue sensors, hehehe. That was fun, even though I looked so ridiculous because I looked like I was doing the breast stroke, hahaha!

Man, I wish it was still Saturday, so I still have another day to sleep in, hahaha.

Hehehe, before I left for work this morning, I managed to catch an episode of Seinfeld on TV. The show's got a lot of funny dialogue all throughout each episode, yeah, but nothing beats the humor of Friends, ehehehe. Or I may be biased, hahaha.

What caught my attention in this episode was when Elaine said that George was not her friend, but a "friend-in-law" because Jerry was his friend. The three of them had planned to go out together or something, but Jerry had to cancel because he had to take care of something else, so Elaine and George had to go without him. They ended up sitting quietly at a table, but then broke the silence by talking about Jerry.

Hahahaha, breaking the silence by talking about the friend they have in common, sharing what they know. I've been in lots of situations like those. Meeting a friend's friend. Hating the awkward silence between us. Desperately thinking of what to say. So of course, what are we to talk about first? The friend we have in common. Hahaha, when something random comes up, that's when we keep on talking, until we find more in common with each other.

It's amusing. Well, I don't really consider people like those as "friends-in-law". Depends on how I know them, they'd either fall under the category of acquaintance or friend.

I got so amused when I found out from the photo shop near our office said that they can scan negatives and save all images to a CD. So I got a found of old negatives and brought them there.

(To those who want to check out some of the photos...)

I guess I don't have anything better to do, hahaha. I'm still wide awake when I'm supposed to be sleeping at this time.

It's been a year since I first spent an entire day at the Atlantis office. Huwaw.

While we were in the office this afternoon, making the most of this one particular hour, Ate Sally made this quip which I easily countered. That's when she commented that I've learned how to talk with them when they start being cracking jokes and being sarcastic.

"Ibang klase na talaga itong si Hogi, diba, Boni?" she said. "Dati, parang di makabasag pinggan... Ngayon basag na lahat ng pinggan, hahaha!"

Ahehehe, that was true. I was a bit timid, quiet and anxious. Heck, I was even afraid of answering the phone. Sure, I always went along with their laughs, but I was still afraid of speaking up. Now, I've picked up their jokes and sarcastic remarks, and developed my own that they managed to pick up as well, hahaha! Plus I've learned how to speak up more, to find my way around Makati quickly.

I love that I've learned a lot with this company. I learned a lot more about the biz, even more than I learned in school.

I was sitting by my lonesome at a coffee shop early this evening, people watching once again as I sit happily with my coffee jelly. Some guy at the table behind me was a student, and he was telling his friend how glad he was that final exams are over and done, and it's finally summer.

I partly envied him. Because I still have to wake up early in the morning and go to work every day while he gets to sleep in. That he can map out his whole day spontaneously every day of the week while I have to work around my schedule.

But even though I know my schedule's going to get busier, specially next month, the other part of me can't wait for that to happen. I miss the hectic days of rehearsals, watching everything take shape right before my eyes. Plus there's the excitement of working with a couple of people for the first time. New director (for me) and crew, meaning I have yet to learn how to read them so I would know how I could work alongside them. It makes me excited and nervous at the same time.

Commercial break: Chatting with Maui right now. Man, I missed that girl. Back when she was still here in Manila, she's the only one in school that matched my passion. When she left to pursue her music career, I thought I couldn't find anyone else in our course that had that avidity for theatre that we had. She was always very encouraging.

My moods are quite the roller coaster right now. I'd be happy and content, then laughing and perky at one point, then suddenly I'm back to brooding over the most trivial stuff. I hate feeling like this. I specially hate it when I start brooding when there's really no reason to. Not good.

Yesterday was Jun's concert at Equitable PCI Tower, called Appasionato, which is actually a Thanksgiving concert for his being accepted into the Daniel Ferro Summer Vocal Program in Italy this July. He had contacted me earlier in the week, asking if I could help out, and I obliged.

When I finally found Jun and Ecel at the venue, Jun suddenly told me to go with him to the tech booth for the lights. Santa banana, he didn't say that lighthing was part of the job description. Fortunately, it was just basic stuff. He just wanted me to sit there and check the stage lighting while he was onstage. It was OK, because the show was going to be a little intimate anyway, but I sure wish they had colored gels because everything was mostly open white, and a bit of amber.

Well, I didn't really do much after that, ahehehe. So I went with Ecel to get some early dinner at KFC a couple of blocks away. My golly, these past several months, I've hardly eaten at any fastfood place except for Jollibee (and only for the pancakes for breakfast), so it was a welcome change.

I got to watch the first half of the show in the tech booth. My golly, I love the voice of Sharon (one of the guest sopranos). After giving the 10-minute intermission announcement, I went down to the lobby to hang around with Ecel. Hehehe, we ended up spending the entire second half of the show there. Dari arrived with his significant other after a couple of songs.

Hmmm... why is it that when you meet a friend after quite a long time, the first question to ask would be "How's your lovelife?"

After the show, I quickly said my goodbyes, then went off to Glorietta to meet with Nicco. Ahehe, I got a little disoriented at first by the time I stepped outside. I forgot whether I was along Gil Puyat or Makati Avenue, so I crossed the street and almost got on the wrong jeep that was headed away from Ayala Center, hahaha!

Found Nicco at (where else?) Timezone, and then started thinking whether we should watch a movie or something. Kept walking and talking around the cinema area, yet with another one of our True Confessions episodes, ahahaha. Debated on watching either Bandidas or Grandma's Boy, then decided on the latter because the last full show of the other movie started a little too late.

Hehe, okie, Grandma's Boy was funny. It's nice to watch a little no-brainer flick every once in a while. Too bad Bei and Maje couldn't join us. They're planning to watch Ice Age 2 later this week, and invited me to come along, coolness. I wonder if there's still work on Wednesday.

I found Bei in Greenbelt after work on Tuesday, with Arumi and their other friend, Aris (sp?). Once the latter 2 had decided to go home, I found myself hanging around Glorietta with Bei.

It was amusing being in the company of that girl for the first time on our own. I've only known her through Nicco because they were both in the Kapihan production together, and before a couple of days ago, we only found ourselves hanging out together in the company of common friends. Then came the frequent chat sessions and random text messaging, and my "friend-in-law" view of her disappeared.

Nicco had told me last night, "Hindi ka naman mahirap kaibiganin eh. Malamang nga magaan loob sayo." That was pretty flattering. Well, it's not just my doing at all anyway. I found her fun to be with, even if we have our own quirks, and I'm not just saying that.

Even though we have our own shopping preferences (she prefers to shop with company, while I like shopping alone), I was amused at the fact that we had a certain eye on jackets, and because she was so persistent about this one jacket we found, she impulsively withdrew some money just to get it that very minute. Hahaha, reminds me of myself when I went shopping with Peachy. Thank goodness it wasn't catching this time.

Found ourselves sitting at a table in Gloria Jeans later that evening with Nicco and Maje, then after a while, we were off to Food Choices so those two can get something to eat. Then we were off to Timezone because I was planning to give Guitar Freaks a shot for the first time, hahaha. I sucked, but thank goodness Nicco was the other player so the songs didn't end right away. Still wanna give it another try though, but man, that part of Timezone is always crowded because of all the real die-hard drummers and guitar addicts. After a bit of Bishi Bashi and some cam-whoring (with Bei and Maje courtesy of my phone, hahaha!), we finally called it a night.

(Technically) Yesterday, I went to see Ice Age 2 again, this time with Nicco, Bei, Mariko and Arumi. Hehehe, I still can't get over that "Peace out" and "My eyes on you" signs by Eddie and Crash.

By the time we got out of the cinemas to have dinner, most of the places are either closed or about to close. When we got to Food Choices, all the places I want to eat at were already closing, rawr. Oh well. Once again, after eating, back upstairs for a dose of Timezone. This time, Nicco didn't get to even touch Guitar Freaks, because there were already 2 guys at it, and their friend at the Percussion Freaks machine next to it as well. They kept taking turns at both games that no one else got the chance to play. Meanwhile, Mariko suddenly said that she wanted to play Dance Maniacs (yes, the same game machine I persuaded Rosa and myself to play when we watched the same movie), so I followed her and Arumi to play. Bei stayed put at Starbucks as Nicco watched the guitar-and-drum addicts who are still at it. Hahaha, I finally got the hang of the game, yay! Of course, that last song was a doozy. We couldn't even make it through halfway, hahaha.

It's pretty refreshing to hang out with a new group of people. I don't think I really have a lot in common with these girls, but thanks to Nicco, I got to see what they're like. Before then, I only knew Mariko as a girl from another org, and we have a bunch of mutual friends. We knew of each other, but never knew each other personally. Bei, Maje and Arumi were probably just random faces, but I never really knew they existed back when I was still in school. They were merely acquaintances when I got introduced to them. I never thought I'd see the day I'd be actually hanging out with them.

They amuse me. In a way, for me (or like me), they're pretty easy to get along with.

An outlet begins next week. I wonder if I'll make it.
Posted by tymeless on April 13, 2006 at 02:55 AM | How's my acting?
Iam's most recent entry inspired me to look back again. Well, I can't go as far as she did, because I never got to keep a consistent journal in high school.

The first thing I found was an old entry from LJ way, way back (many centuries ago? Hahaha...) in 2002. Another "back on this day" thing, I had chronicled what had happened on my first year working for Trumpets Playshop. That was the year I first met Rony, back when he was just a repetiteur for a lot of the classes (and to think that he's now with Hong Kong Disneyland), plus the first time I was under Tito Audie's wing.

Anyway, my entries around this time that year was mainly about that. I was assistant to Myles' basic musical theater class, and he had left for Boracay for about a week, leaving the class in the care of Rony and me. Hahaha, I can remember that Rony had joked that he was glad Myles had returned earlier because he thinks the kids hate him for teaching them all the songs in the span of just 2 days.

In my advanced musical theater class, I was still trying to find my place. The people in the class were either way younger or older than me. Forming cliques was unavoidable, but I didn't want that. It was a little too diverse, but hey, it's a big class, so it can't be helped.

Now I'm wondering whether I should put off my outlet next week or just go for it. I mentioned this to Jamie while we were on Y!M last night, and I had also said that it's a good opportunity to meet new people. Sometimes I feel as if everyone already knows everyone else in Playshop, ahahaha. Well, at least in the Alabang branch anyway.

Oh well, we'll see what happens next week.

Getting addicted to this game called Snoodoku, a Snood spin-off that's a lot like those number place games I find in papers. Hahaha...

This weekend, I never got to do much while I was here at home. I spent most of my time in front of the TV or the laptop (though a little more of the latter).

But someone here at home kept me occupied as well, hahaha. Here are some photos of my boredom buster.

(The one who kept me from being bored...)

Nicco, Maje, Mervin and I met up at Glorietta after I got out of the office. I really wasn't planning on doing anything, but because Nicco was texting me from time to time the whole day asking about CCP, he asked if we could meet up along with Merv.

I still had an hour to kill time after I got off work, so I picked up a random book at Powerbooks Live, read a couple of chapters, then decided to head on over to Glorietta. While I was still in Landmark, I found Kris, one of the sweetest girls I know, wandering about looking lost, hahaha. It's been ages since I last saw her, and that was just a brief hello along the pedestrian walkway. Anyway, I went with her for about half an hour while her mom was shopping for clothes for an upcoming wedding.

Afterwards, I finally went up to Glorietta 4. Nicco had messaged me that he was going to be a little late, but Maje was already there. I had assumed that she would be with Bei, so she was the one I messaged. That, and I only had Bei's number, ahahaha. Apparently, Bei wasn't allowed to come, and Mariko was the one with Maje. I didn't have either's number then, but Nicco sent Maje's number to me, with her messaging me at the same time. They found me a few minutes after that playing Percussion Master in Timezone, hahaha. Then we reloaded my Powercard and played one round of Fast and the Furious and one round of Dance Maniacs. That was when I found out that Nicco was calling my phone while he and Merv were waiting for us near Guitar Freaks. Once again, when Nicco had suggested I play that game with him, I couldn't resist. Hey, practice makes perfect, right? And even though I still sucked, I was sort of getting the hang of it. I just looked kinda funny then because I was decked out in a skirt, hahaha.

Mariko had to leave a few minutes after then, so the rest of us tried to decide on what to do next. The first thing that came to mind was watch a movie, per usual. Merv wanted to see D' Lucky Ones, but the rest of us vetoed that real quick. Nicco and I wanted to see Tristan and Isolde, but then Maje had already seen it. Rawr. Then Maje said that she was willing to watch it again, but that's no fun, hahaha. We had to flip a coin to decide between the two movies, but in the end, what happened? We finally decided to go out and have dinner instead.

Ended up at Krokodile Grill in Greenbelt 3. Hehehe, the last time I went there was during a Joseph cast get-together. Anyway, over tuna sisig, laing and inihaw na usa, the topic we had chosen to talk about was Hollywood movies and actors. Eventually it evolved into old local TV series, hahaha.

We burned what we ate by going to Timezone in Greenbelt 3, and tried out that trivia game Nicco and I had seen once before. Hahaha, that was fun. Try it with your entire clique so you'll really enjoy. It's not as fun when there's only one or two people playing.

After a few other games, someone had suggested we go to Gloria Jeans to just sit around and talk, but then we ended up not going there and just sat around on the steps outside Hard Rock Cafe for a while. Poor Merv, not much sights to see while we were there, ahehehe. When we got sick of sitting around, I suggested we walk around, and led them along Ayala so it would be convenient for me to go home, hehehe.

Oops, phone's ringing. I'm out for now.

Before anything else. I'd like to say this...

Even though they don't really enjoy my pursuing anything in theatre, their support every now and then still floors me.

Thanks, Mom and Dad.

Anyway, so tonight was the first day of Beginner's Acting workshop in Tanghalang Pilipino. Arrived at CCP 15 minutes before the class was about to start, and Nicco, Mervin and I still had to enroll. The two guys had left me to do all the asking, but it was actually easy to find the registration table. We ended up being half and hour late because we had to wait for the person in charge, then we had to fill out our forms plus pay and get the receipts.

We were told that the class was going to be held at the Silangan Hall on the 4th floor, so up we went. The class, facilitated by Ate Tess (well, that's what Nicco called her, so I got around to that as well) was already in session by the time the 3 of us arrived. After getting temporary name tags, we joined the group. Well, they were still introducing each other so we jumped in the name game. To Joseph people, are "Hyper Hogi" and "Naughty Nicco" still familiar to you? Hahahaha.

I like Ate Tess. She's was nice, confident and encouraging. I guess I made the right choice to get into this class. Hahaha, when I first introduced myself, I had said that I wanted to go "back to the basics," because I had immediately jumped into musical theater. Plus this is a good way to branch out.

This world keeps getting smaller every day. Tin, one of our classmates, noticed I was familiar, and then it just turned out that she knew Mimay, Peachy and Jamie Anne! And to my surprise, when the class ended, she had also called me "Ate Hogi," hahaha!

During one break, we had 10 minutes to do whatever. A bunch of us wanted to get something to drink. Water, to be specific. But the vending machine nearby didn't sell anything that's not carbonated, so we decided to check the buffeteria. No luck, it was closed. So our last choice was to go to the eating places at Star City. Run! Ended up buying water at Chowking. My golly, so we were late again, hahaha. But on our way back to the venue, Tin and I were walking ahead of the rest of the group and noticed that Agot Isidro was also walking in our direction, hahaha. She was talking on her phone then she lost its signal after a while, ehehehe.

I'd just like to quote what Ate Tess had said after our trust exercise earlier. "There's always a floor." So true. There's always something to break your fall.

I'm so glad it's finally Saturday. I can finally catch up on some well-deserved sleep.

I guess I can finally say that I made the right choice by signing up for the workshop. I'm not saying that my previous workshops weren't any good. I'm just following what Tito Audie had told a handful of us before. "Branch out!" he had exclaimed. Well, maybe he meant we should leave the nearby venue and go to the bigger one. But I went farther than that on my return to workshops.

There's almost 20 of us in the class, and one thing I noticed in this group, there was no age gap whatsoever. Unlike some of my previous ones, there seems to be this certain gap between the younger kids and the older ones, so the ones in the same age range automatically group together and form a sort of clique. Once again, let me repeat that I'm saying I didn't like my previous training. Heck, that's where I learned most of this stuff.

Hahaha, the funniest part was whenever I spoke. Without fail, Mimay always reacts to everything I say, repeating it, complete with comment that I sound so "conyo". If I didn't know Mimay prior to the workshop, I would've found her rude. But hey, I knew what I sound like. I got used to talking a certain way. Now I know what Miss Tess meant that you have to learn then unlearn to be a good actor.

Our classes have been held at the Little Theater for 2 evenings in a row now. Man, I love the feel of the class when we're there. So much better than upstairs at the Silangan Hall.

I was kinda lazy all week, but here are now some (pics...)

I'll update more when I wake up. Time to catch up on my zzz's.

My throat felt a bit sore since Thursday morning, so I had a feeling I was going to get sick. Yesterday evening in CCP, I could still speak clearly, but my throat was itchy and had a slight cough. By the time a bunch of us were in Tapa King after class, I was already losing my voice. So when I woke up this morning, I had a cough and a slight cold. Waaaaah... I'm sick.

Anyway, let's go back to these past couple of days.

Like I had said last night, I'm glad I went to CCP this summer. Never mind that I don't have time for a break in between getting out of the office and getting my bum to CCP. Heck, the only time I have for myself is when I wake up in the morning and after 10 in the evening. But it's all good, hehehe.

Started working with sense memory yesterday. Oh my, we had to play tug-of-war in the middle of the stage to begin with. Hahaha, our side won because of the word "PULL!!!" and I ended up with the smell of the rope on my hands. When we started with an imaginary rope, I was already dripping with sweat from all the effort, my golly.

After a mirror exercise that was also fused with exploding (well, I guess that exercise was more of a canon than mirroring), I was having a blast. I love exploding. Hahaha, I never got to explode in past workshops. I guess I hung back because... well, I don't really know. I already knew my classmates then from previous years, plus I was already friends with some of them before, so I don't know why I always held back. With this year's bunch, even though I've only met them for the first time (save for Mimay, Nicco and Merv), with them I felt that there was no need to hold back.

A bunch of us hung out together for the first time after class last night. Just dinner at Tapa King in Harbour Square. There was Mimay, Tin, Nicco, Merv, Carmela, Jonna, Fiance, Gem, JP and me. It was fun to finally talk with them outside the workshop. More to come next week. We might go out again next Friday after class.

"My oh my oh my oh my..."

I've been sick all week, and I had to take 2 days off to stay home. Ahehehe, but of course, I still wanted to make the most out of my week, so I only took one day off from our workshop. Hehehe, I really couldn't stay away, even if I still had the cough.

We spent 2 evenings in a row at the CCP Main Theater! Hahaha, it was a blast; I actually got to trod on the stage barefoot.

We've been working on improvisation this week, and I love it! I needed to learn improv, because, yes, even with that, I still held back before. Hahaha, as expected, we first worked on one-word story and similar stuff, but when we started moving up, we all started going crazy. For 3 days, we completed the "sex, drugs and violence" them, ahehehe. I specially enjoyed yesterday's exercises. In one, we would all go up 3 at a time, and we had to be in 3 positions (sitting in a chair, standing, or just on the floor) with no one doing the same thing while keeping a conversation going. Then next was the alphabet, where we made conversation in pairs, alternately beginning each sentence with A, B, C and so on. Too bad I didn't get to try the shopping list. That was more interesting.

Oh yeah, last night, during our last hour of class, we got to go to the conference hall, where the musical theater class was being held. They were to present a little something from what they learned in class, and we had to do so as well. We decided to do two: the Brain exercise (otherwise known as the Oracle) and the Prism (a multiple mirror exercise). I was absent the day they did the latter, so I decided to join this group so I can try it. Before then, we rehearsed everything in the main theater first. Then we were off to meet the other class.

First observation upon arrival, we looked haggard than the musical theater class, hahahaha! We were all sweaty because we only had a bunch of electric fans cooling us in the main theater, while their class venue was airconditioned. And they were all wearing their IDs. Oh yeah, I think there were only 9 of them in the class, while we were twice as many. Plus they looked a bit more reserved than we were.

They did this slow time exercise, plus a short dance that incoporated moves contributed by each of them. By the time they were done, I guess we were thinking, "Hey, with what we're about to show, it'll look like we're just playing compared to what they did, hahaha." So anyway, we first showed one Brain (there were two), then our Prism, then the other Brain. Hahaha, the Brains' answers were just too crazy for words.

After class, a whole bunch of us went to Jollibee for dinner, then to Providence for videoke-ing the whole night away. Oh my, when Ian joined us, he got a little crazy. OK, way crazy. No way will we ever look at him the same way again, hahaha. I doubt we'll ever have any more respect for him as one of our teachers come Tuesday, HAHAHAHA! Kidding!

Man, I'm still coughing. But at least I feel better than earlier this week.
